Carnwath Road

Carnwath Road: Bespoke Propping for a residential basement.

ContractorVKE Group

LocationLondon, UK

About the project

Carnwath Road is the site of a major new residential development in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. Once complete, it will deliver high-specification apartments with a private basement car park.

Conquip was brought in by the basement contractor VKE Group at tender stage to deliver a full-service propping scheme to support excavation works and construction of the basement.

Working alongside VKE Group from early design through to installation phase, Conquip’s team of temporary works engineers designed and supplied a customised temporary propping system tailored to the project’s structural requirements. The result was a collaborative and safety-focused partnership, with Conquip enabling VKE Group to meet a stringent delivery timeframe and to maintain momentum across their construction sequence.

Overcoming complex constraints

The excavation for the basement car park presented several engineering and logistical challenges:

  • Deep excavation within a tight, residentially bordered site
  • Interfacing with party wall retaining structure
  • Removal sequence adapted to align with changes in basement excavation depth
  • Accelerated install and removal needed to satisfy the fast-track programme.

“We gave them (Conquip) drawings that were originally racking props, they helped us to simplify the solution to flying shores, which meant that the bulk dig could progress much quicker.”

Anna Clarke | Project Engineer, VKE Group

Designed for efficiency

To meet the demands of the site and programme, Conquip delivered a full temporary works package, value-engineered to provide a staged propping scheme that supported both excavation and early construction phases. Our team turned the design around quickly, to enable VKE to meet the tight deadlines set by the principal contractor.

Key elements included:

  • Design package including temporary propping, design of thrust block and corbels and temporary condition design checks of the capping beams.
  • Cat 3 checks of all temporary works elements within the basement envelope.
  • Primary props installed and removed in sequence with dig phases and slab pours.
  • Corbels and thrust blocks coordinated with the reinforced capping beam.
  • Modular, high-capacity props designed for reuse.
  • Conquip coordination with the piled wall designer to ensure compatibility.
  • Integration with construction logistics and materials delivery.
  • The use of modular, reusable propping systems reduced waste and supported circular construction principles — helping the client meet environmental KPIs while reducing cost and carbon.

“We went beyond standard propping design to deliver a fully integrated temporary works solution, taking design ownership key elements and structural checks—helping VKE Group meet demanding deadlines through a genuinely collaborative approach.”

Kevin Ryall | Senior Bid Manager, Conquip
