Part 1: The Concrete Lifecycle: Understanding Each Stage, From Pour to Washout | A Conquip Series

Concrete is the backbone of almost every construction project in the UK, but the moment the concrete leaves the mixer, it becomes one of the most tightly regulated, safety-critical and environmentally sensitive materials on-site.

Getting the concrete lifecycle right involves handling, cleaning, capturing waste and documenting every step, in a way that protects your people, programme and environment.

Part 1: The Concrete Lifecycle: Managing the Journey

Every concrete operation follows the same broad workflow, whatever the sector. Understanding the lifecycle is the key to running a site that is both productive and compliant.

Step 1. Pouring

The pour is where productivity is won or lost. The right equipment puts concrete exactly where it needs to go, safely, at the right rate, with minimal waste and rework.

Where a site has crane access, concrete is most commonly placed using a concrete skip. Our skips are engineered for daily demand and safety, including:

Step 2. Blowout

On sites pouring with a concrete pump, the line must be cleared at the end of the pour; this is called concrete ‘blowout’. Done badly, it is dangerous and messy: high-pressure release of residual concrete and air is a serious hazard and uncontrolled discharge creates waste and contamination.

Our blowout equipment ensures the process is safe:

  • Blowout Attachment for Concrete Skip (for skips with or without a bale arm, 1000L and up): Add this as an extra to capture the blowout discharge directly into the skip, which can be reused easily in the next pour.
  • Autolock Blowout Skip: A dedicated, self-locking solution for controlled, contained blowout, usually used for smaller blowouts.

Step 3. Washout

After every pour, it’s essential that skips, chutes, trucks, pumps and attachments (basically anything that touches concrete) are washed out quickly and thoroughly. This results in concrete washout water and is where most concrete pollution incidents happen. Wet concrete and washout slurry are highly alkaline and corrosive, so this untreated water must be contained and should never be allowed to run to drains, watercourses or open ground.

We have a number of washout items to suit every site size and setup:

  • Concrete Washout System: A 2000lt capacity, fully contained washout solution that washes and collects wastewater, with the addition of neutralising it to be reused for other applications on-site. Ideal for sites with a crane that need to wash out concrete skips, a truck chute and larger equipment.
  • Compact Concrete Washout Unit: A smaller unit for sites with limited space and needing to wash smaller equipment, without crane use; wastewater can be treated with a pH-neutraliser and stored in the water tank (up to 800 litres).
  • Skip Washing Platform and Skip Washing Drip Tray: For safe, contained skip cleaning as part of a site’s concrete washout set-up

Step 4. Cleaning, maintenance and documentation

The final stage is the one that keeps the whole lifecycle compliant and repeatable: maintaining a dedicated washout area, keeping equipment safe and certified and documenting effectively. And it’s a stage that’s often seen as unimportant or a ‘minimum effort’ task. It shouldn’t be – because letting cleaning build up reduces uptime, costing money and reducing overall productivity.

Best practice means establishing dedicated washout areas, neutralising and disposing of waste correctly, thoroughly cleaning down equipment so it works as new, and keeping lifting and work equipment inspected and in good order through LOLER and PUWER regimes. It’s also where contractor responsibilities are most often overlooked — which is exactly what Part 2 in our series will go into.
