Part 2: The Concrete Lifecycle: A Guide to Sector the Needs, Environmental Regulations and Contractor Responsibilities | A Conquip Series

This is Part 2 of a three-part series. In Part 1, we went through Managing the Concrete Lifecycle — pouring, blowout, washout, cleaning and maintenance.

Here in Part 2, we look at different sectors and what the contractors need from concrete handling and the environmental regulations every contractor must meet. And Part 3 covers the services and support behind the equipment.

What different sectors need from concrete handling

 

Our products and services are loved and used regularly by contractors working in five areas of our industry, and each has its own priorities.

Infrastructure & Utilities (Highways, Water, Rail, Bridges & Energy / Tier 1): Large, complex, HSE-critical pours where early contractor engagement and temporary works expertise add real value. These projects demand fully compliant, design-engineered equipment, reliable lifting and loadout logistics, and a partner trusted by the world’s leading infrastructure contractors.

RC Frame & the built environment: Tunnelling, piling and high-rise city projects involve high-volume, structural pours, often with concrete placed by cranes and skips with slips and formworks and can have vertical challenges. These sites need durable, high-quality equipment that survives intensive repeat use, a fast, reliable supply, and washout solutions that keep a busy, space-constrained site compliant.

Civils & Groundworks: Foundations, slabs and substructure work on sites with and without crane access. Many pour using trucks and pumps, so neat pours and washout solutions for trucks, attachments and accessories are essential, along with nationwide next-day delivery to keep the programme moving and minimise downtime.

Plant Hire & Distributors: Operators need easy-to-use, reliable, fully compliant equipment for hire, backed by fast UK-wide delivery, readily available spare parts and dependable after-sales. Equipment has to be durable enough to survive repeated hire cycles and arrive certified and ready to work.

Housebuilders: Multi-plot developments mean frequent, smaller pours that need to be neat and tidy, such as foundations or manhole pours. Speed and nationwide coverage matter, as does after-sales support that keeps the kit running plot after plot.

Concrete waste, the environment and your responsibilities as a contractor

Whatever the project, waste and wastewater is the part of the concrete lifecycle that carries the most risk — and the most regulatory responsibilities.

Fresh concrete and the slurry produced when you wash out is strongly alkaline, typically around pH 11–13 and is classed as corrosive and harmful to the aquatic environment. Allowing it to enter surface water drains, watercourses or groundwater is a pollution offence that can result in enforcement action, clean-up costs and reputational damage. Compliance to the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2016, the Water Resources Act 1991, the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and the Environment Agency’s RPS 287 is mandatory*.

As a contractor, your core responsibilities include:

  • Contain, don’t discharge: Washout water must never be allowed to run into surface water drains, ditches, watercourses or onto open ground. Use a dedicated, contained washout facility positioned away from drains and watercourses.
  • Treat, neutralise and keep records: High pH washout water should be settled and pH-corrected before any permitted disposal. Our Concrete Washout units are designed to capture and contain washout for controlled handling, and our technical user guides include pH instructions to support correct treatment.
  • If you’re not treating, dispose responsibly under your duty of care: Concrete waste and contaminated water must be correctly classified, stored and transferred only to authorised waste carriers, with the appropriate waste documentation retained.
  • Hold the right consents: Any discharge to ground, sewer or controlled waters generally requires a permit or consent from the relevant authority, the Environment Agency in England, Natural Resources Wales, SEPA in Scotland, or NIEA in Northern Ireland, or your water company.
  • Keep equipment safe and certified: Any lifting equipment (skips, attachments, lifting frames) must be inspected and certified under LOLER, and work equipment must be maintained under PUWER.

Adopting recognised best practice for concrete washout, contained, treated and properly disposed of, protects the environment, your workforce and your project. Regulations and guidance are updated periodically and vary by nation and by site, so always confirm current requirements with the relevant environmental regulator and your own QHSE team.
