Port Talbot Steelworks

Temporary works design and excavation support equipment at a low-carbon steel making project.

ContractorAndrew Scott Ltd

LocationPort Talbot, UK

The Project

In the summer of 2025, Tata Steel UK began construction of its first electric arc furnace (EAF) steel making facility, located on its existing steelworks plant in Port Talbot, South Wales.

The £1.25bn project is seen as a key milestone in the transition to the UK’s decarbonisation and sustainable manufacturing drives.

Conquip was selected by contractor, Andrew Scott Ltd, based on their proven ability to deliver safe, robust and efficient temporary works designs, equipment and expert technical support for large, operational industrial sites.

The Challenge

A number of deep excavations were required in the enabling works phase, before the new furnace infrastructure could progress, including:

  • More than 10 manhole excavations, suited to a constrained operational environment with variable ground conditions.
  • A modular cofferdam system, engineered for ground and hydrostatic pressures on this complex brownfield site.

The Solution

Conquip initially supported and coordinated with the team at Andrew Scott Ltd to facilitate the excavation works for the manholes using its bespoke Shoring Solutions design for its Manhole Boxes.

This was followed by a temporary works design incorporating GU13 Sheet Piles and five levels of hydraulic 300 Braces for the modular cofferdam system which was in place for a number of weeks prior to the installation of an 80,000 litre stormwater interceptor, followed by removal of the braces prior to phased backfilling of the deep excavation.

Along with other equipment and accessories, the Conquip team were on hand throughout the project to provide detailed installation guidance, on-site adjustments and on-call technical support from our in-house engineers.

Project Feedback

“We are delighted to be working together with Conquip on this landmark project at Tata Steel UK’s Port Talbot site. The team’s collaborative approach, technical expertise and versatility has delivered a robust temporary works solution to each application in a complex, live industrial environment. Conquip’s support has helped us to maintain safety, programme compliance and operational efficiency throughout the construction phase. We look forward to continuing this strong partnership as the project progresses.”
