Planning Excavation Support for Utilities and Infrastructure Projects

27th, July 2026

Contractors are often working around live services, restricted access, changing ground conditions, local communities, tight programmes and strict safety requirements. Getting the right excavation support in place early can make the difference between a site that keeps progressing and restores services to the local community as soon as possible and one that faces avoidable delays.

Our teams support contractors on utilities (including water, wastewater, electricity, telecoms and gas) and infrastructure projects before, during and after excavation works with temporary works design, equipment hire and sale, technical guidance, reliable delivery, installation guidance and after-sales services.

For planned works, we believe the earlier the collaboration, the better the results….

Start with the right design support

Good excavation support starts before equipment reaches site.

Our in-house engineers create design packages for standard and bespoke excavation support solutions, helping contractors and temporary works teams plan the right approach for the works.

We provide a next-day (or less) turnaround time on temporary works designs including drawings, calculations and check certificates (CAT3 if required). Within our Quality Management System, the professionally qualified team provide solutions within current design standards, including BS5975:2024 and best industry practice.

Design solutions are supported with detailed user guides, Safe Systems of Work and technical information. Our team can provide stand-alone solutions or coordinate within for 2D / 3D site models.

This approach gives contractors a clearer plan before work starts, helping teams manage a unique range of site constraints, ground conditions, excavation depth, access requirements and programme pressures.

Choosing the right excavation support equipment

Planned utilities and infrastructure works can involve a wide range of excavation requirements. The right equipment depends on the ground, the depth, the application and how the team needs to work around the excavation.

Typical solutions include:

  • Trench Shoring: Box systems to support manhole and trench excavation and pipe installation.
  • Double-Acting Manhole Brace: A four-sided hydraulic bracing system used with trench sheets or sheet piles to support light to medium excavations.
  • 300 Brace: A high-load, four-sided hydraulic modular bracing system for use with trench sheets and sheet piles, and in temporary excavations across a wide range of applications, including cofferdams and tank installations.
  • Aluminium Waler Frame: Two-sided support and is used in conjunction with trench sheets, providing a safe and adaptable working area below ground, particularly on utilities projects.
  • Depending on the scheme design, a variety of profiles of Trench Sheets, Sheet Piles and End Panels provide a safe environment to support the excavation and for personnel working in trenches.
  • Safety Equipment: For safer access, working and protection around the excavation zone.

This is where Conquip’s full service becomes valuable. Contractors are not just hiring this range of equipment. They benefit from design support, technical information, compliant hire and off-hire deliveries, installation guidance and access to a group of experts who understand how the equipment is used on-site.

Installation guidance and technical support

Once equipment reaches site, support doesn’t stop. Toolbox talks, on-site or remote advice, installation supervision and on-site training are all available.

Our commitment is to provide Temporary Works Engineers, Site Teams and Project Managers with added assurance that the excavation support scheme is understood on the ground – beyond the design stage or equipment hire.
