The XXL Lifting Cage: The Story that Changed the Game for Lifting Efficiency

18th, February 2026

In 2018, the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER) introduced a requirement for every lifting operation to be supported by an individual, approved lift plan. Each plan must clearly detail how goods and materials will be transported safely, creating an increase in administrative operations.

During this period of time, the Battersea Power Station was undergoing reconstruction, and the contractor in charge of delivering the mechanical and electrical services for the site was facing several challenges: specifically, the team required a disproportionate amount of valuable crane time for lifting individual pallets and awkward loads, which were often classified as oversized and negatively impacting the budget and overall productivity.

This raised the question…

Is there a safer way to lift and move materials more efficiently and more safely on-site?

XXL Lifting Cage

Where the idea began…

The contractor’s Lifting Operations Manager approached Conquip to collaborate on an idea to improve productivity on-site.

The team was spending hours of crane time transporting single pallet loads of materials. In many cases, oversized loads were frequently lifted using slings, which could get caught or snagged on the building structure or surrounding scaffolding during lifting operations. This method not only increased the risk of falling materials but also required lengthy preparation before each lift.

The Result: Six pallets in one cage, and one lift plan

Working closely with the contractor, Conquip developed, design-engineered, manufactured and trialled a single, large lifting cage capable of safely accommodating six pallets worth of materials, or the space for larger awkward loads, all covered by one lift plan.

This enabled the project team to cut six crane lifts down to one, following one approved procedure. The result was a streamlined process that cut crane time and cost cutting down the project programme significantly, whilst still ensuring full compliance with LOLER requirements.

In the years since, with an increased need to lift a variety of materials items in a cage and with a related lift plan, the XXL Lifting Cage has been extremely popular for significantly enhancing efficiency, improving safety and simplifying regulatory compliance for complex on-site lifting operations.
