Strategic Partnerships with Tier 1 Contractors: Head of National Accounts Q&A

15th, June 2026

Whether a main contractor is awarded a single major project or is working across multiple sites, there are several considerations that project directors, procurement teams, QHSE leaders and contract managers are asking us. And our decades of experience working with Tier 1 contractors on infrastructure and utilities projects, in particular, have shown that partnering with us has a positive impact across productivity, safety and sustainability. So, we sat down with our Head of National Accounts, Craig Wearne, to answer the questions we hear most often.

Q: What are the most common requirements from Tier 1 contractors at the moment?

Main contractors need to ensure a high standard of site operations on planned infrastructure and utilities projects, whether they’re self-delivering or managing a series of subcontractors. They know the outcome will lead to standardised practices as well as improved productivity and safety – across all their sites around the UK.

Here’s just a few examples that keep on coming up:

  • Secure fuel management, with a clear audit trail showing how much fuel each contractor is using
  • Organised and accessible welfare areas, including boot washing and central briefing stations
  • Levelled and safe ground surfaces, using road plates and/or timber bog mats
  • Compliant concrete washout and COSHH storage practices
  • Reducing and clearly containing waste of all kinds, including shingle and dust
  • Lift plans for any lifting operation with a crane, as well as a lifting operations with a telehandler and excavator
  • A reliable, fast hire service, with national coverage.

Q: How can main contractors choose the right partner to work with their subcontractors?

This question is often about minimising risk and ensuring trust. When a supplier works with subcontractors directly, that happens by operating under the Tier 1’s umbrella, and any inconsistency in service, communication or compliance reflects on the project.

What I hear main contractors look for is a supplier with structured account management, clear escalation routes and a consistent approach, whether they’re talking to a procurement director or a site foreman. They want a supplier that understands the complexity and breadth of the business and takes that responsibility seriously.

Q: When managing contractors in their supply chain, what should Tier 1s look for?

The strongest equipment partners offer a genuinely broad range across lifting, pipe laying, site set-up equipment, materials movement, fuel management, excavation support and more – and make durable kit available for hire and purchase.

I always suggest that they should look beyond the kit. Look for services that support project teams: consultancy and advice, in-house transport, after-care services and comprehensive technical resources. All this means one procurement relationship, one set of terms and one team accountable for delivery.

For procurement managers needing simpler supply chains, these points offer real advantages – and we’re set up as that partner.

Q: Do you offer training sessions and technical support for teams within the main contractor?

Absolutely. Conquip can contribute to pre-construction planning and run lunch and learn sessions for lifting or procurement specialists, for example. Those sessions can be online or face-to-face, designed for professionals who want to deepen their knowledge in any of our specialist areas. Our door is always open to discuss what project or specialist teams may need to know or benefit from learning.

Plus, we offer structured paid-training courses for site teams from Conquip Covered.

Q: How do you balance the delivery of productivity, safety and sustainability when partnering with Tier 1s?

This is the question that separates genuine partners from kit suppliers. Our team knows that Tier 1 contractors are operating on high-profile schemes and need partners who understand that safety, sustainability and programme efficiency are all required, all of the time.

The equipment itself matters, but equally so does the guidance and services around it: how it’s specified, how it’s documented, how it’s used and how it’s managed and maintained throughout a project’s lifecycle.

Q: The development of Temporary Works schemes on infrastructure and utilities projects is always top of mind for Tier 1 contractors and their sub-contractors. What capabilities does Conquip have?

It’s an exciting and growing part of our business. Many large contractors around the UK are already choosing Conquip for their ground engineering projects, with those contractors driving the specification and choice of excavation support partner with their own contractor supply chain. That applies whether it’s short-term, reactive works or a planned project. Our specialist temporary works engineers and technical sales teams work with the project’s temporary works and site engineers to produce designs and organise hire equipment for:

  • Box Systems – a full range of Trench, Manhole and Drag boxes and panels – for shallow excavation
  • Hydraulic Braces and Frames – for deeper excavation
  • Temporary Propping – for deep excavations on major projects, plus our Temporary Logistics Deck
  • Trench Sheets and Sheet Piles – to support cofferdams, retaining walls and excavated ground
  • Engineering Expertise – with on-site supervision and installation.

Q: And finally, does Conquip have some form of ‘Framework Overview’? Something that can be taken back into the contractor’s business or project to evidence to colleagues how a single supplier like Conquip has capabilities to support multiple projects without creating dependency risk…

For main contractors running multiple schemes right around the country, a framework arrangement with the right supplier offers significant advantages, but it only works if the supplier can genuinely deliver at scale, work to procurement processes and standards, and fit within the rest of the portfolio of partners.

Conquip can demonstrate:

  • Consistent, broad, available product catalogue: so, site teams and subcontractors are working with familiar, standardised equipment
  • Stock availability for hire and purchase: proactive management that means we listen to anticipated needs and have the ability to support multiple projects with consistency
  • Relationships with subcontractors: ensuring the right project outcomes are achieved anywhere around the country
  • Specialist support and advice geared to each type of stakeholder group in the business, including procurement, QHSE, temporary works engineers, innovation, lifting specialists and construction delivery teams
  • Clear pricing structure: agreed rates across all equipment categories, removing the need for project-by-project negotiation and giving the commercial team clear visibility
  • Project-level consultancy: dedicated support, whether it’s in the pre-construction phase or later down the line with project delivery, equipment is specified correctly at every stage
  • Dedicated teams on standby: an appointed team and access to some of our senior leaders, so we can balance levels of proactive and reactive partnership.
