Building a Skilled Construction Workforce: How O’Halloran & O’Brien’s Training Academy is Making a Difference

12th, May 2022

HOW TO CREATE A WIN-WIN TRAINNG AND DEVELOPMENT SCENARIO?

The topic of “how can we attract more people into construction careers?” / “how can we create a more skilled construction workforce?” has been subject of many industry conferences over past 10-20 years in the UK.

The big question: How is the best way to go about this?

And it seems that many are not sure. Or prefer to just talk about it… One organisation that have started “putting their money where their mouth is”, is O’Halloran & O’Brien through their Training Academy launch. As a partner of OHOB, Conquip have been grateful to support the Training Academy through donation of equipment and to support the Open Day held on 11 May 2022.

Open Day Overview and the objectives of the OHOB Training Academy:

OHOB Training Academy held an Open Day event which marked the launch of their Training Academy for the wider construction industry. The event was attended by representatives from various organisations and industry professionals to see the facility and hear about the objectives.

Martyn Price, Workforce Development Director of O’Halloran & O’Brien, kicked off the event detailing how the centre had been in development for two years and that it was created to not only give people the skills they need to join the construction sector, but a way of upskilling the existing workforce.

The event was also attended by the Department of Work & Pensions and the Skills Centre, who are working with OHOB to provide courses in construction to those who have finished their GCSEs, or are looking for employment.

We’ve run introductory courses. We’re working hand-in-hand with the Department for Work & Pensions, local schools, there’s opportunities for apprenticeships and training with ourselves.
Kiearan Duggan | CEO, OHOB

A BESPOKE APPROACH TO TRAINING

OHOB Training Academy is different to a lot of other training centres – the training is bespoke and tailored to meet changing industry demands. A lot of the training is hands-on, giving people the opportunity to experience a real-life construction environment. This focus means that within several weeks, someone can have a qualification and be earning from a skill they have just leant.

We spoke to Joshua, one of the trainees: “I’ve been at the Training Academy for just 6 weeks and now I am ready to go to site.”

The Open Day event was also an opportunity to recognise the support received from the suppliers who have been collaborating with OHOB by providing equipment and machinery for the purpose of training.

SUPPORTING FUTURE LEADERS IN CONSTRUCTION

Conquip was one of the partners of the event, showcasing a range of equipment, such as: CantiDeck crane loading platforms and the Crane Forks Cage – the fail-safe solution to lifting palletised material. Our team provided equipment demonstrations and valuable insights into safety and efficiency-led methods in lifting and other areas of construction.

It was a refreshing Open Day full of opportunities and insights into how the industry can collaborate to help develop and enrich the UK’s construction workforce, to enable us to build the future.

OHOB’s Training Academy is based next door to O’Halloran & O’Brien’s head office, in Gravesend, Kent and offers a wide range of courses and training. For more on OHOB’s Training Academy and how they can support a career in construction, visit https://ohobtrainingacademy.co.uk/courses
