Equipment Inspections FAQ – Conquip Covered

19th, February 2024

As part of Conquip Covered’s range of after-sales services, we offer PUWER and LOLER inspections on any equipment you have on-site. Our priority is to ensure that all equipment is fully compliant with UK standards and regulations and that it is safe for our customers to use, preventing any accidents occurring and extending its lifecycle at the same time.

In this blog we run through the details of our inspection service and answer frequently asked questions.

What are the types of equipment that Conquip offers inspections for?

Our team of in-house engineers carry out LOLER inspections on any lifting equipment, such as cages, beams, attachments, and chains. Plus, any equipment that is manoeuvred by crane or other lifting apparatus.

They also undertake PUWER inspections on any other equipment to ensure it is fit for use.

What equipment do you inspect?

Lifting cages, lifting beams, crane attachments, plant attachments, tipping skips, storage containers, COSHH equipment. You name it, we’ll inspect it.

Do you only inspect Conquip equipment?

No, our engineers inspect equipment you have on-site, whether it is manufactured by us or we’re able to inspect most from other manufacturers. Our focus is to ensure your kit is compliant and safe to use.

How long does it take to carry out a PUWER or a LOLER inspection?

Well, that depends on the piece of kit. Visual inspections usually take no longer than a few minutes, but any operation or functionality checks and thorough examinations take longer as they are more extensive. Should any repairs be required to return the equipment to an acceptable working order, these also will increase the overall time of the inspection.

What’s included in a LOLER inspection?

LOLER inspections examine the safety-critical parts of any lifting equipment or accessories to ensure it is fit for purpose, with any defects reported and any serious defects that are, or could become, a danger to personnel, ensuring repairs are carried out before it is approved for use again.

According to the Health & Safety Executive (HSE), a LOLER inspection ‘…needs to include all matters which affect the safety of the lifting equipment, including likely deterioration with time.’

How often should LOLER inspections be carried out on my lifting equipment?

Any lifting equipment and accessories used to lift personnel – every 6 months.

All lifting accessories – 6 months.

What’s included in a PUWER inspection?

PUWER (Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations) inspections cover any equipment that is not used for lifting operations. PUWER inspections cover whether equipment is suitable for its intended use and if it is safe to use.

How often should a PUWER inspection be carried out?

Every 12 months.

What’s the difference between LOLER and PUWER inspections?

LOLER and PUWER regulations are the two main types of equipment maintenance legislation for the workplace in the UK. They can be commonly mentioned alongside each other because the legislation can overlap.

Both sets of regulations place responsibilities and requirements on employers to arrange periodic inspections on the suitability and installation of equipment.

However, LOLER only applies to equipment used for lifting materials and personnel, whereas PUWER applies to all equipment.

I have multiple sites; do you offer a rate card or group deals?

Yes we do, get in touch with your Account Manager, email the Conquip Covered team at  support@cqegroup.com or give our customer support team a call on 0333 300 3470 to discuss.

How many visits will it require to inspect all the equipment on my site?

Hopefully, just one. Before one of our engineers gets to your site, our dedicated office team will have determined the amount of equipment you have on-site and when it was last inspected or serviced. This helps us understand the work involved and the length of visit required, so we ensure we keep disruption to a minimum.

How quickly can you get an engineer to my site?

We have a team of engineers covering the whole of the UK. We will always aim to get to you at the earliest convenience, but this largely depends on demand. For any urgent enquiries, we advise getting in touch with us as soon as possible to avoid or limit any downtime on-site.

Are repairs covered on the same visit?

Absolutely, if it is possible to repair the equipment on-site, otherwise we will arrange for our FORS Gold-accredited trucks to collect it, carry out the repairs in our workshop and deliver back to site as soon as possible.

What if my kit is fails an inspection?

If your equipment is so badly damaged, it cannot be repaired on-site or in our workshop, we can arrange a replacement unit on next-day delivery, if needed, and remove the failed equipment from site.

When will I receive the inspection reports?

We aim to send your report the next working day but during high demand, this can occasionally be a couple of days.

Do we get a report of the works carried out?

Yes, for any lifting equipment you will receive a LOLER Report of Thorough Examination. If lifting and non-lifting equipment has been inspected and examined everything will be covered on same report of thorough examination.

What if I forget when my next inspection is due?

You don’t need to try to remember…we handle all of that for you. Our team will get in touch before your next inspection to get you booked in, so you never miss another appointment, rest assured that your equipment is compliant and safe to use, always. For lifting equipment, inspections will be scheduled every 6 months. Any other equipment will be every 12 months.
