UK Construction Week Birmingham 2023 Event Report

5th, October 2023

In October Conquip was pleased to be a headline sponsor of the Infrastructure Hub at the UK Construction Week event in Birmingham.

THE INFRASTRUCTURE HUB

The hub hosted an extensive range of discussions, presentations and debates with industry leaders around the complexities and progress of infrastructure and how to achieve ‘Innovation in Action’. Conquip led three sessions on the agenda:

  • A fireside talk, ‘Collaborative Innovation: navigating complexity, while championing sustainability in infrastructure’. The right methodologies can transform the way infrastructure projects are planned, managed and executed. From the intricacies of bottom-up to top-down construction, to streamlined logistics that minimise crane and plant dependencies. Our industry panel unpacked real-life applications and success stories in infrastructure management. Adam Hicks, Director – Strategic Partnerships & Major Projects at Conquip and guest speakers Lauren Blakely, Principal Consultant/Associate Director – Pre-Construction/ Projects Delivery, Infrastructure Projects, Lendlease and Georgia Thompson, Constructability Engineer, Costain discussed the topics.
  • A case study, ‘An infrastructure project success story with Conquip’. The audience heard about the recent collaboration on the Hinkley Point C project, including how pre-construction, early project methodology and planning and best practice implementation led to a better energy infrastructure project, with George Critchley, Group Director at Conquip and guest speaker John McCoppin, General Plant Manager, Bylor Hinkley Point C.
  • A panel, ‘Does how we build matter as much as what we build?’. Rob Law, Head of Temporary Works at Conquip led a panel with guest speakers Jemma Quin, Temporary Works Manager, Robertson Group and Director, Temporary Works Forum and Siu Mun Li, Head of Temporary Works Engineering, Multiplex and Director, Temporary Works Forum, to discuss how better, early design and planning and best practice implementation leads to a more sustainable building process – as well as a better infrastructure project.

SO, HOW CAN CONQUIP ADD VALUE TO INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS?

• Bringing our team in at the pre-construction phase helps our customers to re-imagine their build methodology in a way that delivers value engineering and optimises equipment on-site, to enhance safety and reduce build time.

• Our skilled team of design engineers have extensive experience collaborating on complex infrastructure projects with Tier 1 contractors, with safety, productivity and sustainability at the forefront of their design ethos.

• Our design methodology aims to reduce plant and people interfaces, ensuring smoother operations and safer work environments.

• Our focus on improving the safety of lifting equipment storage has led to fewer accidents and increased efficiency.

• Safety is at the heart of our business, and by reducing the number of lifts and enhancing the safety of lifts, we’re making construction sites safer for all.

• We’re improving the efficiency of working areas and creating safe meeting zones, fostering better communication and collaboration.

• Our full fuel management systems are cutting down on theft, saving costs and resources.

At the event, Peter Haddock, industry journalist and founder of Content for Industry, interviewed Adam Hicks at Conquip to discuss these points. Click on the image to watch.

NEW INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECT CASE STUDIES

To further demonstrate our heritage in infrastructure projects, at the show we released two new UK project case studies:

Thames Tideway

We played a pivotal role in designing temporary works for the connection culvert at the Greenwich Pumping Station, a unique component of this Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project (NSIP). This case study highlights our innovative solutions and collaborative approach in overcoming extensive temporary works project management.

HS2

This case study showcases Conquip’s recent collaboration with SCS Railways on the HS2 high speed rail project. We worked in partnership with the Skanska Costain Strabag project to design an innovative lifting platform designed to facilitate both working and access within the project’s ventilation shafts. Engineered to meet specific project requirements, the platform not only adheres to stringent safety regulations but also offers cost and efficiency benefits. The case study underscores our commitment to engineering excellence and its ability to deliver bespoke solutions for complex infrastructure challenges.
