The historic City Tattersalls Club is undergoing an extraordinary redevelopment with Richard Crookes Construction leading the way. The redevelopment of this 126-year-old landmark will preserve the façade of the historic building through innovative engineering and design to create a mixed-use destination that will redefine Sydney’s skyline.
The Challenge
One of the most challenging aspects of this redevelopment involves the excavation and material removal from the constrained inner-city site. This process, critical to the project’s progress, was made significantly more efficient and safe through the use of the 8000L BulkX Direct-to-Truck solution.
Conquering Urban Construction Challenges
One of the standout features of the project is the complex excavation process, which posed significant logistical and operational challenges. Situated along Pitt Street in Sydney, the site offered only one vehicle entry and exit point, adding to the complexity of spoil removal.
To overcome these challenges, Richard Crookes Constructions employed the 8000L BulkX Direct-to-Truck system, Australia’s leading material-handling solution designed for efficiency, safety, and space optimisation. Through consultation with Conquip technical staff, BulkX allowed the team to load excavated material directly into trucks in a single operation, streamlining the process and minimising disruptions.
The 8000L BulkX Direct-to-Truck is a perfect fit for difficult-to-access redevelopment projects through its unique set of features:
Efficiency: Loaded 16 tonnes directly into trucks in one go, cutting load-out times and ensuring quick street operations.
Space Optimisation: Eliminated on-site storage needs, maximising space in the constrained CBD site.
Traffic Management: Minimised truck queues, enhancing traffic flow and reducing pedestrian disruptions.
Safety: Reduced manual handling, creating a safer work environment.
Where alternative methodologies often fail in these situations, BulkX succeeds. For comparison the other solutions involve the typical approaches to basement excavation – long reach excavators, conveyors, muck bins and clam shells – often run at a higher cost per hour or per cycle.
By using BulkX in the tight restrictions of Pitt Street, more spoil was able to be cycled out faster from the excavation than any other method. A win for the project and a win for the traffic along Pitt Street.
Common Issues and Practical Solutions
Façade retention and the redevelopment of historic buildings have been pressing challenges in Australia’s cities over the past two decades. Many heritage structures have fallen into disrepair, underscoring the importance of projects like the City Tattersalls Club redevelopment. These initiatives offer a unique opportunity to preserve Sydney’s cultural legacy while revitalising valuable CBD real estate.
For Richard Crookes Construction, the BulkX Direct-to-Truck system proved to be the ideal solution, ensuring preservation, streamlining excavation, and optimising costs—paving the way for a successful balance of heritage conservation and modern development.

The Project
The Potomac River Tunnel (PRT) marks the next major phase of the DC Clean Rivers Project. This phase includes constructing a large-diameter deep sewer tunnel, along with diversion facilities, drop shafts, and support structures. These components capture flows from existing combined sewer overflows (CSOs) along the Potomac River and convey them to the Blue Plains Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant for treatment.
The Challenge
The project team excavated eight shafts to create outfall locations on the river. They removed large amounts of muck and spoil at depths of around 20 metres, then continued to excavate through a hard rock layer below.
During each phase, the team needed to efficiently remove material from the bottom of each shaft, lift it vertically using a crane, transfer it to muck-away zones, and load it onto trucks for removal from the site.
The Solution
Conquip manufactured two 12,000-litre capacity BulkX units and provided a customised gantry that allowed muck to discharge directly into waiting trucks.
This solution gave the project a high-capacity, reliable, and robust method for muck removal. The BulkX units increased the excavation and material removal rate while improving safety and eliminating people-plant interface risks.

Results
The excavator operator filled each BulkX with muck, and the team then lifted it from the bottom of the 20-metre-deep shaft to the surface, repeating the cycle continuously. Each cycle moved about 14m³ of material every 6–7 minutes, enabling the team to load approximately 9 trucks per hour.
Conquip’s BulkX significantly accelerated the excavation process and reduced project dig times.

Project feedback
"The biggest benefit of working with Conquip’s BulkX system is they've been hands-on in helping us develop and really bring the efficiency to the system - and we've also bought things to the table and shown them that has helped with the efficiency too. So it’s been a good collaboration.”
“We actually have the advantage of live loading the truck instead of using the muck bins. So instead of having to drop the material into the muck bin and then reload it with another piece of equipment, we actually cut down on how much staffing we need for that and we get to live load the truck and send them straight away from the job site. The spoil doesn't have to be double handled - it just saves us so much time and hassle.
“I would always recommend the BulkX system for mucking away. Conquip are very straightforward, trying to engineer for efficiency and make it better once it’s there."
